For an intersting look at the history of Park Forest and how it was progressed and changed before and after we attended Rich East, Arcadia Publishing has included a book on it in their series "Images of America."  It is a reflection of the pace of change that many of the landmarks I remember are no longer there.  The book is "Park Forest - Dreams and Challenges."  Here is a link to it http://www.arcadiapublishing.com/9780738519500/Park-Forest-Dreams-and-Challenges

The cost is $21.99 plus shipping and it is a memorable read.  Enjoy and see you all soon.

I would just like to comment on how much I enjoyed the reunion. I thought it was very well planned and my hat is off to all of you who spent time in its organization. Particularly, I would like to thank Bob Whitanowski and Joe Nicolosi for their dedication to the website that has been so enjoyable to me. I can literally spend hours entertaining myself by looking up my classmates and reading about what they have done in their life and where they live now. I would sincerely hope that we can all get together again in 5 years. We're not getting any younger, so we can't wait too long. Until then, I wish you all the best in the years to come.

Just a reminder...only 14 months until our multi-class reunion at the Excalibur in Las Vegas. This is for the Rich classes of 1954 through 1965 (and anyone else who wants to attend). Be sure to keep it in mind when you are making your 2015 vacation plans.

Bob:  Is there any more information about the 2015 multi-class reunion?  I think Caryl Harris was going to get more information, but I'm not sure anything is posted.  Thanks, Arlene

Caryl Harris (Sewell)

Hi Everyone!

I hope you have set aside a few days in May of 2015 for the next reunion in Las Vegas.

To the best of my understanding, it will be a somewhat casual affair with a dinner on Wednesday, May 13 as the only official gathering. It will be at the Excaliber Hotel in Las Vegas and includes everyone from Rich Township High School classes of 1957 through our class of 1963.

Ask me questions and I will try to find out the answers, as this is all I know!  The organizers of this reunion are thinking we might want to spend a week in Las Vegas while there to attend the reunion dinner. The contact info. for each class is listed below. I don't know if they have found anyone yet to represent the class of 1962,

Hope you can join us!!

Pearl and I will be there in LV.  Looking forward to seeing many of you that were and were not in Lincolnshire last year as well as many old school mates from earlier classes.

One thing that is on most people's bucket list for visiting LV is to attend at least one of the Circe du Soliel shows. The tickets are expensive - typically the good seats are about $140 to 180+ each depending on the show. I have been to two Circe shows (neither in LV) and they were both spectacular and unforgettable.

WIth that in mind, I contacted my youngest brother, Howard (who didn't go to Rich - we moved from PF in 1965 when he just finished Blackhawk Jr.High). Howard is the GM and EVP of Treasure Island (about 2 miles north of Excalibur - on the same side of the street - just north of Mirage and across from Venetian. It was the second hotel that Steve Wynn built after the Mirage, but he sold it long ago.) They have a Circe show, "Mystere", and I asked Howard if we had a Rich High night (probably Tuesday at 7:00) with say 50 people attending, what kind of discount could he get. He contacted Circe which handles all of the big group bookings and they said for the Tuesday May 12 (or Monday May 11) 7:00 shows, they could sell 50 tickets for $3435, or about $69 each, slightly more than 50% off the $147 top ticket price (including handling charge). There is a 9:30 PM show, but that has typically high demand, so they can't discount it. There are other Circe shows, but Howard only has control of Mystere at his hotel. I would think that given the age distribution of the reunion group, the 7:00 show would be better (unless everyone had a long nap in the afternoon). Looking on the internet, I couldn't find any big discounts at other shows. If there is sufficient interest, we would need to make a definite booking to insure the price availability, probably best within a month or so, early January. I would think that opening this up to the entire reunion would make sense.

I'm not sure what the reunion committee structure is like, but since Caryl is our rep, perhaps she can take this to the committee to see what the interest is.

Larry Toy

PS. Howard said that the $47/night rate at Excalibur is really good. He couldn't come close to matching it, especially in May, which is a busy month.

Hello All,

I so enjoyed the 25th reunion way back in 1983, but will not be attending the next get-together in Las Vegas now that we live in Costa Rica. However, I would like to interest you in my first book now available on Kindle. It is called AMANDA RANCH.

AMANDA RANCH started about 12 years ago as a screen play. It did quite well in screenwriting competitions in the horror/thriller category, was read by some producers, but that was it. It sat on my self for years. We have a small writer's group here in Grecia, Costa Rica, and one of the members suggested turning the screenplay into a book. It is now available on Kindle, soon to be available in hard copy.

If you are into sex, time-travel, decay, horror, irony and weirdness, this could be an entertaining read for you. Anyhow, check it out on KDP (Kindle). You can read the first three chapters as a free appetizer.

I don't know what Mr. Borich would say about it, but I think he'd like it.

Regards to all,

Paul

The Holiday Theater was a deal at 25 cents for Saturday double feature.  Remember the Cry Room?  And who can forget necking in the balcony?  Kaye Smith and I took the bus to Chicago Heights to see "Psycho" against my parents' objection.  I should have listened.  I still lock the bathroom door to shower!!

Nancy Kilbride (Cook)

I didn't understand what the cry room was for. (There were lots of little babies around, but their mothers never took them to the movies.) When I got to be 7 or 8 years old a man in our court died, and his wife wailed all night. I decided the cry room was for women whose husbands had died.

The most intellectually challenging element of 25 cent matinee at the Holiday was, for me, choosing between Charleston Chew and Chocolate Turkish Taffy.  Surprisingly, I still have all 32 of my teeth.

I remember buying my box of carmel corn at the shop in the plaza. Back then you could take it in with you to the matinee!I loved that aroma and watching the big vat of caarmel spinning round and round. Yum!

Hi Gang,

Thought I would my thoughts and memories of the Holiday Theater.  The 25 cent Saturday matinee movies were great.  Does anyone remember in the fall the weekly Duncan Yo-Yo Contest?  It was all the winners of the daily contests on stage, trying to win a bike, or something.

And Seth, the Yo-Yo contests sponsor was Bonomo Turkish Taffy.  Everyone got a coupon for a free bar.  There were four flavors, Vanilla, Banana, Chocolate and Strawberry.  I liked the Vanilla and Banana.  I just read that they are back….and have added Wild Cherry.  I do not remember what they cost way back then, but today the cost 98 cents a bar.  Oh well.

As for the crying room….what a great idea.  All theaters should have them today.  It would be nice to have them in nice restaurants also.  I do not like sitting next to a crying baby.  I love kids, but a crying kid is a pain at times.

Peg and friends: I remember the serials they would show before the main feature.  Flash Gordon was my favorite. You'd watch with eager anticipation, then that cliffhanger scene would keep you waiting till next week.
Do you remember that soda shop around the corner?  Forget the name, but I really liked their Green Rivers and Vanilla Phosphates. Wasn't lucky enough to do much necking, but when I was fortunate enough to go with a girl - I do recall those awkward times when I spent half the movie attempting to stealthily put my arm around her! Oh, for the touch of her shoulder!  Good times, huh?

The Holiday Theatre. I remember the line that strung from the Holiday to the Karmal Korn Shop. Then you'd stand their clutching your Nickle, taking forever to decide which penny candy to pick. Dots? Wax lips? Candy lipstick? Bulls eyes? Too hard to decide. The woman behind the counter was understandably frustratedalthough we thought she was mean. And the cry room. Am I the only one that used it to neck? I don't think so.

05/28/15 10:53 PM #36

Deborah Garretson

Larry, forgive me for posting again. I remember phosphates and Green Rivers at Shelly's Deli. Andrea Borr worked there for awhile if I remember correctly. My mother held rehersals for PF Playhouse in their basement. They sat on big cheeses.

Arlene Gerstel (Clay)

Even I remember necking in the cry room as well as the balcony!  That's where I first saw "Love Me Tender" with Elvis Presley and realized what all this male/female stuff was all about!  Helene Schwartz and I both worked at Burny Brothers Bakery around the corner!  Good times!

In response to Craig's memories of the Duncan yoyo competition:  My big brother, Pete, (class of 1960) won that contest and rode away on his trophy Schwinn bicycle.  Rumor has it that he can still "walk his dog" and "around the world".  By the way, he is a serious bicycle enthusiast.  Rides those crazy hundred mile cross state events.  I prefer to keep my feet on the ground.
